The river gets its name from the copper mines around the river. The word Tama means Copper and Koshi stands for the name of the river. The high current and rapids of the river make it very difficult for commercial use. However, the river is great for kayaking. The banks of the river are now a construction site of a mega hydro electricity project known as the Khimti project.
Rafting and kayaking in this river is however considered as a dangerous one. The ultimate thrilling experience that rafting in this river provide might be pleasant to only a few number of rafters.
